Answers

1. What is the difference between the Nelson Post and News in the Kootenays?

The two sites are part of Inthekoots, a network of sites based in the Kootenays. The Nelson Post is a news site focussed on Nelson and the surrounding area. The majority of its stories are originals written for the site. Some posts on the Nelson Post are aggregations from other sites. News in the Kootenays is a regional news site that collects interesting and relevant stories from various news outlets in the East Kootenay and West Kootenay. Both sites are run by Chris Shepherd.

2. What is aggregation?

Aggregation is the practice of summarizing a story and providing a link to the original source. An aggregated story may include a direct copy of an interesting quote, but the source is always recognized and linked to where possible.

3. Does aggregation violate copyright laws?

No. We wouldn’t do it if it did. Inthekoots works through an exemption in the Canadian Copyright Act. The section relevant to aggregation can be found under Exceptions, Fair Dealing and I’ll reproduce the section for you:

News reporting

29.2 Fair dealing for the purpose of news reporting does not infringe copyright if the following are mentioned:

(a) the source; and

(b) if given in the source, the name of the

(i) author, in the case of a work,

(ii) performer, in the case of a performer’s performance,

(iii) maker, in the case of a sound recording, or

(iv) broadcaster, in the case of a communication signal.

No. News in the Kootenays is part of Inthekoots, an independent network based in the Kootenays.

The majority of newspapers in the Kootenays are owned by Black Press, a chain based out of Victoria.
