New group asks Kimberley to halt deer cull

As the City of Kimberley starts into culling deer in their community, a newly formed group has come forward asking the city stop, reports Carolyn Grant for the Kimberley Bulletin.
The Humane Treatment of Urban Wildlife Committee just heard about the city’s cull after nearby Cranbrook shared the results of their own cull.

The RCMP pulled Margaret MacDonald, 82, over eight months and demanded a breathalyzer test. She couldn’t blow hard enough because of a medical condition and so she’s facing a charge of failing to provide a breath sample among other charges, reports Barry Coulter for the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.

There’s something odd heaving up a section of a Cranbrook street, but officials have no idea what’s causing it and it’s got them a little concerned, reports Sally Macdonald for the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.

In a bid to raise the Invermere’s profile, the community announced they want to create the world’s largest skating rink, seeking to upset Winnipeg (the longest skating surface) and Ottawa (the largest skating surface).
Interior Health reflects on 10 years in the East Kootenay

No bail request from Hopley

Randall Hopley, the man accused of kidnapping a Sparwood boy, isn’t asking for bail, reports the CBC.
Kienan Herbert, a three-year-old Sparwood boy, went missing from his family’s Sparwood home this September. The disappearance prompted a major search but ended when Kienan was returned to his bed. Police arrested Randall Hopley in connection with the case.
Cranbrook deer cull underway

Cranbrook has started thinning the herd of deer in their city limits, reports the CBC.
The city has a permit from the Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations to kill 25 deer. They’re using net traps to catch the animals and then a bolt gun (similar to what’s used in slaughterhouses) to kill them.
