More charges in tree-planting camp case

Last summer a tree-planting company operating near Revelstoke and Golden made headlines over alleged abuses of its workers. This week fraud charges in connection to that situation have been levelled against the owner, reports Bethany Lindsay for CTV BC.

Khalid Bajwa, owner of Kahira Enterprises, has been charged with two counts of fraud and using forged documents.

Federal assessment says Beaver River IPP holds ‘unacceptable risk’

Fisheries experts have weighed in on the Beaver River Hydropower Project, a cluster of run-of-river installations proposed for Ventego, Cupola and Alder creeks, located northwest of Golden and on the Glacier National Park boundary.

The group of fisheries and aquatic technical staff reviewed the proposal. The review team consisted of members of the Ktunaxa Nation Council – Canadian Columbia River Intertribal Fisheries Commission (KNC), the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

Tree-planting boss sold house, avoids paying planters: suit

The owner of a tree planting company shut down because his employees were found in working in atrocious conditions is now facing a lawsuit alleging he sold his house to avoid paying his workers, reports Bethany Lindsay for CTV BC.

Kahira Enterprises made headlines last year when its workers, mostly from African nations, were found working in poor conditions at a tree planting camp near Golden.

Boo the grizzly bear returns home

Boo the grizzly bear is back home, reports Lea Storry for the Calgary Herald.

The bear lives in a grizzly reserve at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Revelstoke. He made a break for it (for love, specifically) earlier this month.

Golden’s grizzly spotted

Boo the grizzly bear has been spotted near his Golden-area refuge but apparently he isn’t done looking for love, according to a report by the Golden Star.

Boo – an orphaned bear that grew up in a grizzly refuge at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort near Golden – escaped earlier this month. The bear was spotted on Monday, June 13 outside the perimeter fence of his refuge.

Love is in the air for Golden’s grizzly

Boo the grizzly bear, resident at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort grizzly reserve near Golden, has gone AWOL, likely in search of love, according to a report by the CBC.

The eight-year-old bear has been known to get through the fence in the springtime.

“We believe the main reason he decided to jump the fence [is] there has been a female grizzly in the area,” said resort spokesman Jordan Petrovics. “We believe that is the main reason — he decided to see what is on the other side of the fence.”

Ice climber rescued near Golden

The Trans Canada Highway was closed east of Golden after three ice climbers were caught in an avalanche yesterday, reports the CBC. The local search and rescue crew had to use a helicopter to fly out one of the climbers who was knocked unconscious and buried in the avalanche. He was rescued by his companions. [...]
