Last summer, Fernie resident Jon Turk and Erik Boomer circumnavigated Ellesmere Island by kayak, foot and skis. For that accomplishment – considered one of the last great polar expeditions – he and Boomer are up for National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year award.

The RCMP says a Fernie man is lucky to be alive after getting stuck on a ledge near Fernie, reports Angela Treharne for The Free Press.
Calen Gahlinger Beaune, 20, was hiking in Mount Fernie Provincial Park, trying to reach a local summit when he got stuck on a ledge. He called the Fernie Alpine Resort on his cell phone.
Missing toddler found in locked condo

A two-hour air and land search for a missing Fernie boy was called off after he was found locked in a nearby condo, reports Angela Treharne for the Fernie Free Press.
Members of search and rescue and 50 members of the public took part in the search that included the nearby river. The boy was found in vacant condo, says Scott Robinson of Fernie search and rescue.
