New scams making the rounds

The RCMP want the public to take care when dealing with emails and cheques sent from unknown sources, reports Tessa Clayton for the Trail Daily Times.
One man received a cheque for thousands of dollars in exchange for being a secret shopper and all the man had to do was send back some of the money. The cheque was fake. Another man received an email from the “BMO Financial Group” asking for his financial information.
Computer / phone scammers working the Kootenays

Police in Nelson and Cranbrook are telling the public to be wary of unsolicited phone calls from people posing as software technicians who are actually trying to steal sensitive information.
The Nelson Police Department sent out an alert last week, according to the Nelson Post.
Six thefts from cars in one night

Thieves made the most of several unlocked cars in Trail, prompting six reports of theft in just one morning, reports Tessa Clayton for the Trail Daily Times.
Cpl. Dave Johnson of the RCMP says there’s been an increase in thefts from cars over the past month.
Attack at Nakusp hot springs not hate crime: Police

Police say they don’t have evidence to pursue a hate crime charge for the beating of a man at a hot spring outside of Nakusp, reports the CBC.
Police identified a Calgary man as the suspect and are pursuing an assault charge against him.
“I don’t know what the motive was,” said Cpl. Bryson Hill. “We have heard everybody’s side of it. We can only go on that. There really isn’t anything at this point to suggest it was hate motivated.”
2010 drowning ruled homicide

The 2010 drowning of an Alberta teacher near Revelstoke has turned into a homicide investigation, reports Aaron Orlando for the Revelstoke Times Review.
Laura Letts Beckett drowned in Shelter Bay on Upper Arrow Lake in August 2010. According to the Times Review, the woman was boating with her husband. The RCMP aren’t releasing much but are asking the public to come forward with any information that might help with the investigation.
Rumours of attempted abduction false: RCMP

Rumours of an attempted abduction in Salmo are false, say the RCMP, but they are investigating an alleged assault against a seven-year-old girl.
Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel, head of the RCMP’s Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment, confirmed police are investigating a possible assault that happened on Saturday, June 4.
ATM thieves get two years jail time

Two men arrested for a string of ATM thefts in the Kootenays were sentenced to two years jail and ordered to pay $90,000 each.
