A Nelson-area family is recovering after losing all their belongings in an early morning fire yesterday, reports Bob Hall for the Nelson Star.
Harold and Jeanine Koeltgen and their daughter Ava, 11, escaped the fire without any injuries along with their two dogs and a rabbit. They are still looking for their missing cat.
It was the young girl that raised the alarm, waking the family up at about 6 a.m.
“We’re incredibly grateful that Ava woke us up,” Jeanine said, voice shaking. “She saved the day. The fire alarms didn’t go off until we reached the door because the smoke was on the outside. She’s our hero for sure.”
