Weird growth confuses Cranbrook officials

There’s something odd heaving up a section of a Cranbrook street, but officials have no idea what’s causing it and it’s got them a little concerned, reports Sally Macdonald for the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.

Joe McGowan, director of Cranbrook’s public works department, doesn’t know what to call it and offers several options to the Townsman. Bump? Lump? Boil? (Editor’s note: Ew.)
Here’s what he does know: the odd bump in the intersection of 4th Street South and 14th Avenue appeared on Sunday, Jan. 1; it’s lifted the asphalt 50 centimetres; and according to the maps and plans he has, there’s no water main that should be causing the boil. (Ew.) It must be a water main, however.
“Our records do not show anything in that location,” said McGowan. “That is not unusual. In the older portion of town, things were done and not well documented.”
