Last summer, Fernie resident Jon Turk and Erik Boomer circumnavigated Ellesmere Island by kayak, foot and skis. For that accomplishment – considered one of the last great polar expeditions – he and Boomer are up for National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year award.
In an interview with National Geographic, Turk, 65, gives a sense of what challenges he and Boomer faced.
“What do you do when a polar bear charges you? We found yelling colorful language was more effective than gentle talking,” says 65-year-old writer and Arctic explorer Jon Turk. “The right tone could communicate, ‘You’re bad. We’re just as bad.’”
