The body of 29-year-old Sheilah Sweatman, a member of the Kootenay Swift Water Specialists Team, was recovered today. Sweatman drowned in the Goat River south of Creston yesterday while on a call.

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary has thrown their support behind a local initiative to decentralize medical marijuana growing, reports Karl Yu at the Grand Forks Gazette.
The regional directors sent a letter of support in principle for a pilot project by the Grand Forks Compassionate Society, asking the federal government to hand over control of medical marijuana growth to the province. Jim Leslie, executive director of the society, said he wants to see medical marijuana grown at many locations instead of a centralized facility. This could economically benefit the region, he said.

A local swift water technician drowned yesterday during a body recovery operation near Creston.
According to an RCMP press release, search and rescue members were investigating a vehicle in the Goat River, south of Creston, when the technician fell overboard and did not surface.
Province signs rural internet deal with Telus

Internet service to rural B.C. could see major changes with a billion-dollar deal between Telus and the province, reports the CBC.
The deal, announced on Wednesday, June 29, will expand high-speed internet service to rural areas at affordable rates and add cell coverage along 1,700 kilometres of highways, among other items.
Man recounts nearly fatal trip down creek

A Nelson man swept down a Kootenay creek credits getting his jacket caught on a log with saving his life, reports Greg Nesteroff for the Nelson Star.
Scott Newland jumped into Kokanee Creek earlier this month and rescuers say he was lucky to survive the ordeal in the freezing, rushing waters. Newland had jumped into the water to rescue a friend’s dog.
Deer dominates Kimberly’s council meeting

Following a doe’s attack on a Kimberley woman, that city’s council is casting about for something they can do to deal with the animals, reports Carolyn Grant for the Kimberley Bulletin.
At issue was whether the city should appoint their chief corporate officer to take some immediate action of reconvene their Deer Committee. Some councillors were worried there’d be too much of a delay were they to wait for the committee to get into gear.
Call for homeless shelter in Trail

A group of 15 Trail residents have asked that city’s Salvation Army to open up a year-round shelter, reports Val Rossi for the Trail Daily Times.
A temporary shelter operated in Trail during extreme winter weather in February and March. Some people say there’s a need when the sun is shining as well, including Eleanor Harper, coordinator of the United Church’s food bank.
RCMP looking for missing Creston woman

The Creston RCMP are seeking public assistance in locating a 23-year-old Creston woman who has not been seen since Saturday, June 18.
Alana Chipesia, also known as Lana Sundby, was last seen at her personal residence on the Lower Kootenay Band Reserve.
